Who was James Bayer?
James “Jim” Bayer (1938–1985) was a pioneering leader in sport and recreation in Nova Scotia and across Canada. Raised in Dartmouth, he excelled as an athlete, coach, and educator, beginning his career after graduating from the University of New Brunswick first physical education program. He served as a consultant for the Nova Scotia Department of Education, completed groundbreaking drowning-prevention research at Springfield College, and later became the founding Director of Operations for the Nova Scotia Department of Recreation. In 1977, he served as Dean and Director of Athletics at Acadia University. James volunteered with Recreation Nova Scotia’s predecessor organization, the Recreation Association of Nova Scotia as an instructor of Volunteer Training Workshops. The James Bayer Bursary was developed after James’ passing in honour of his contributions to Recreation in the province. The first bursary under the program was awarded in 1998.
Purpose: The purpose of the James Bayer Bursary is to provide Recreation Nova Scotia members with financial assistance for personal or professional development or academic opportunities, related to the field of recreation
Funding: Each fiscal year, there will be $1500 available through the bursary program. Bursaries will be a maximum of $500 and will be available until fully subscribed. Funding can be used for expenses associated with the pursuit of professional development and academic opportunities. Expenses can include registration fees or tuition, mileage or overnight accommodations.
Eligibility:
- All applicants must be a member in good standing with Recreation Nova Scotia;
- Professional development or academic opportunity must be related to recreation or demonstrated to support a recreation professional in Nova Scotia
Application Process:
- Applicants must complete an online application;
- Applications for the fiscal year open on April 1st and funding will be available until fully subscribed;
- The RNS Awards Adjudication Committee will review and make decisions on applications;
- Recipients are required to submit a report to Recreation Nova Scotia within 2 months of the completion of their professional development opportunity.
