Recreation Nova Scotia Announces the Anti-Racism Charter in Recreation Initiative

Halifax, NS: This week Recreation Nova Scotia (RNS) rolled out the Anti-Racism Charter in Recreation Initiative with funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage and support from Wisdom2Action (W2A).

The Charter will be developed over the next several months with the guidance of a Steering Committee and Youth Advisory Council composed of leaders in the recreation sector and those with lived experience.

The Charter will provide unifying guidelines for the recreation sector in Nova Scotia to address and combat systemic racism. Recreation Nova Scotia will work with W2A to provide in-person and online opportunities across the province for recreation stakeholders to share input and feedback and help shape the Charter.

The first step is connecting with Nova Scotians across the province to share their experiences via a survey that will help to better understand how racism and discrimination exist across the recreation sector.

"The Anti-Racism Charter, and the work leading up to its development, will promote discussions and action regarding racist and discriminatory behaviour in recreation. As an organization, we are privileged to lead this work and collaborate with partners along the way" said Recreation Nova Scotia's Board Chair Gordon Tate.

More information on how to participate in the survey, focus groups, training sessions and more can be found on Recreation Nova Scotia's website at Anti-Racism Charter in Recreation.
